Gender-based violence (GBV) is an issue that affects everyone in Canada; however, young women and gender diverse youth, with intersectional identities, are especially at risk. Given the impact GBV has on survivors, bystanders, and communities, it is essential that we engage in collective action towards ending GBV – and this is where the Creating Space program comes in.

What is Creating Space?

Creating Space is a program designed by YWCA St. John’s to address gender-based violence, develop mental well-being, and build youth leadership in our communities by working directly with youth to be intergenerational mentors. The program provides an intersectional lens on preventing gender-based violence and ensuring young people learn and lead the work on building safety in their relationships and communities, including speaking up on the realities of violence in and against marginalized communities.

Delivered in partnership with local high schools, ‘Creating Space’ supports young women and gender diverse youth in developing critical thinking and leadership skills, relating to youth GBV prevention, through a series of four (4) afterschool sessions. The program runs in a space provided by the partnering school, with YWCA St. John’s providing all program materials and activities.
